DO NOT tap boulevard trees for sap!

3/4/2016

Maple syruping season has begun but that does not mean your city trees are fair game.  Tapping boulevard trees for sap is actually prohibited!  “Driving a nail, hook, or staple into a tree creates a wound—the beginning of decay, which is the most common reason for unexpected storm damage to trees,” explains Gary Johnson, U of MN Extension Professor for Urban Forestry.  The wound can also be a point of entry for tree diseases and pests.

Protection of public trees is a priority for the city.  Damaging city trees is a misdemeanor, and it could result in a fine.  Pruning or removal of public trees is allowed only by permit from the St. Paul Department of Parks and Recreation.
